Snowshoe With The Pups

Another good Cape Cod winter day.  The decision to take a snowshoe was the right one, though I was not sure it would happen given we could not immediately put our hands on a set of snowshoes that were nearly lost in the recent organization in the basement.

Harry and Luna did well in the cold and blowing snow in the fields.  Better in the woods protected from the wind.  We watched them mouse (or vole?), and it appeared Luna was successful with one nest given the amount of chewing she was doing.

Heading back to the Titan, we came across a pair of dogs. A big, fluffy, intact male mix that appeared to be mostly malamute and a female shepherd mix.  No owner in sight.  We left our dogs off leash to deal with them, which they did very well.  Harry was not happy about the male and let him know it!  Luna may or may not have given the female a goose on the leg as we may or may not have heard a little yelp.

The canine strangers seemed to have been put solidly in their place as we continued towards the parking lot and they stayed with us.  We came across an old friend and neighbor out for a ski.  It was good to see her.  I met her some 30+ years ago, but back then she was the older sister of a friend who, as I recall, didn't really acknowledge me, or her brother for that matter as big sisters do.  There was a time when I worked nights in her father's medical office printing and adding medical transcription to patient records.  She became our riding instructor, friend and neighbor.  She also works in the same marine research building my mother did back in the 70s and early 80s.  It has been too long since we spoke with her other than the wave of the hand as she passed the house on her bicycle or in her car.  She squatted on her skis to allow Luna and Harry to inspect and eventually give her smooches.  Mrs handed her treats to give the dogs to break the ice.

We heard shouting from behind us and saw a man with a backpack walking with a purpose across the field.  The dog owner, we assumed.  He collected and leashed his dogs, apologizing if they had done anything (he was sure he heard a yelp...) and continued on towards the parking lot, another man carrying only a can of Coke joined him from a slightly different direction.

After more catching up, we said our good-byes and headed back to the truck. Harry was clearly bothered by the cold wind and snow on his toes, lifting and licking his feet and looking a little put out.

A few images from the walk:

The cattle dog in her can't help but grab a leg....

 Searching for mice and/or voles.

 Mrs and the pups.

 Harry intent on something.

 Mouse!

 Mmmmm.  Mouse.

What a delightful way to spend a snowy day. They sure look like they were having fun. Love that buried head look. Mighty use to do that in search of moles.
Can't feel too sorry for the hapless voles. They are a real gardeners pest.
