Main Street Mile 2009

On Sunday, Mrs and I took part in the 27th Main Street Mile in downtown Falmouth. This race is put on by the Falmouth Track Club. A whole lot of fun in a very short time.

According to the track club's website "The race was founded by the Hard Core Mothers, parents of Falmouth High School Boys' Cross Country Team members coached by Tom Turkington. They envisioned a running event in which the whole family and runners of all ages and abilities could participate."

We picked up our numbers and t-shirts just after 10:00 at the Surf Drive Beach building and then drove down Walker Street to see if there was any flooding given the heavy rain we had on Saturaday. While there were some good-sized puddles, it was obvious that it would be in good shape by the 1:00 start.

We returned to the beach house at about 12:30 and got a fantastic parking place right in front. The race ends here, so we opted to leave the car here and walk to the start.

Walker Street. Connects Main Street to Surf Drive and is a really great place to run.

Thank you Falmouth PD for taking care of traffic.

We gathered on the Village Green awaiting the start. Here is a Falmouth Track Club representative, Courtney Bird advising us on the start.

Father/son pre-race stretching.

The green is in between two roads that flow into Main Street. Anyone who believed they could run the mile in under 7 minutes was asked to assemble on the left side and the rest on the right. This would allow the faster runners to not get mixed up with us slow pokes.

At the right side starting line. The faster crowd can be seen in the background.

Our new New Balance after their first race.

So, I had a PR with a finish time of 6:43:9 (I was astonished to get in under 7 minutes). 50th place overall. 4th in my age group. A short run like this was an amazing amount of fun. It was a beautiful day on Cape Cod.

#52 at Surf Drive Beach.

After the race we treated ourselves to some steamers from Cataumet Fish and stuffed ourselves silly with them and a great cookout at home.

Is it really legal to run on "Walker" Street?
Seriously, congrats on your time and those really are cool looking shoes.
