Funny Eggs

The chickens are all molting and have been for a while. There are piles of feathers under their roost and they have all but stopped laying eggs. We get one or two each day now if we're lucky. Today there were two and one was freakishly long and large. I enjoy raising chickens and moments like these make it all the more fun. Small ones, big ones and occasionally one with no shell. Membrane only. Those are really interesting to see and feel.

Here is a normal egg, a standard Bic pen and the big one.

Mrs holding the big one.

Need a super extra-large carton for this one!

From a woman's viewpoint, I can only say "OUCH" and hope she is resting nicely now.

The irony is that we (society) see this as odd, and maybe statistically it is, but we are so accustomed to the uniformity of store-bought food that it is nice to have a little dose of reality from the FBF. I’ll keep this post in mind when spring nears and our hens start to lay.

elvoy - Absolutely good point. And if you look at the image of the eggs in the box, I don't think any of them are the same size.

This particular hen lays similarly shaped eggs, but this one was large even for her.

How old are your birds now?
