Lawrence Island Paddle

Mrs and I took advantage of a beautiful Cape Cod day and hit the water. It's been over a year since the kayaks have been in the water. Ridiculous!

We launched from the town boat ramp at Megansett on an outgoing tide and paddled a short distance to Lawrence Island. Here we beached the boats and set out some beach towels. Mostly we just soaked up some rays, watched people and enjoyed the day. Then we paddled around Squeteague Harbor and Amarita Island.

Lawrence Island is just barely an island. Most of it is in the town of Bourne and I am not sure if we beached in Bourne or on the very tiny tip of the island that is considered in Falmouth. The island protects Squeteague Harbor, Amarita Island and the properties along the harbor. It's a pleasant trip and aside form a few motor boats is pretty safe and quiet. On this map, Lawrence can be seen just above the words Megansett Hbr.


There were many ospreys soaring around and hitting the water for fish. Also, common terns were putting on a bit of a show. I was quite surprised to see a white-winged scoter in Squeteague (picture further down the page). On the way out we came upon a nice flock of semi-palmated plovers.

Our little piece of paradise on Lawrence Island. When we first arrived, the sterns of our boats were still in the water. On the return trip the tide had gone so far out there was about another 25 feet of beach, albeit muddy, below the waterline in the above image.


This wonderful golden retriever, Sandy, spent a good majority of the time just hanging out in the water. As we paddled by she came right up to our boats for a pat on the head. If only all dogs were this good.
